Construction to begin Wednesday on Route 1 intersection improvements in Fredericksburg
FREDERICKSBURG – A project to improve safety and traffic operations on Route 1 between the Stafford Avenue and the College Avenue/Eagle Village Drive intersections will begin construction Wednesday, Sept. 23, and will continue through Oct. 2027.
The project is being funded through Virginia's SMART SCALE state transportation program. The application for this project was submitted by the City of Fredericksburg.
When complete, the $4.7 million project will have made the following changes:
Along Route 1 southbound
- Right turn lane from southbound Route 1 onto Augustine Avenue.
- Pedestrian crossing signal equipment across Eagle Village Drive at the Route 1 intersection.
- Relocated right turn stop bar for vehicle traffic on Eagle Village Drive at the Route 1 intersection to better accommodate pedestrian crossings.
- Sidewalk along Route 1 between Eagle Village Drive and Stafford Avenue.
- Closes access to Snowden Drive from southbound Route 1
- Removal of a service road running parallel to Route 1 between Eagle Village Drive and Augustine Avenue
- Revisions to the curb and median islands will be made at the Powhatan Street and Augustine Avenue intersection.
Along Route 1 northbound
- Prohibited right turns from Route 1 northbound onto Augustine Avenue. After the project is complete, Augustine Avenue traffic will only be permitted to exit onto Route 1 from this side street.
- Closes access to Snowden Drive from northbound Route 1.
- Revisions to the curb and median islands would be made along the west side of Route 1 at the Powhatan Street/Augustine Avenue intersection.

Travelers can expect periodic daytime lane closures between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Route 1 will remain open to traffic throughout the project, but construction will implement brief detours at various locations on intersecting side streets during some construction phases. Detours will be announced in advance.
Stay alert for crews and equipment operating in the work zone.
The project contractor is A&M Concrete.
