Proffit Road bridge in Albemarle County closed for emergency repairs

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation has closed the Route 649 (Proffit Road) bridge over Norfolk Southern Rail Road in Albemarle County to traffic to perform emergency repairs to the bridge piers.

The bridge will remain closed while VDOT crews assess the structure and complete the necessary repairs. At this time, there is no estimated timeline for reopening the bridge.

Through traffic should follow the recommended detour route during the closure, which uses Route 20 (Stony Point Road), Route 250 (Richmond Road), Route 2500 (John Warner Parkway), Route 631 (Rio Road East), and Route 29 (Seminole Trail).

Signs and message boards will be in place to alert motorists to the closure and detour.

VDOT will provide additional information, including an anticipated reopening date, as the repair work progresses.

Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are posted to X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page.

Current traffic conditions, VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras, and other travel information are available on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app, or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.

VDOT’s Culpeper District includes the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock. The independent city of Charlottesville maintains its own roads.
